Nepali Movie FlashBack

Uddhab Poudel’s production and Dayaram Dahal’s direction, The Flash Back: Farkera Herda is a complete entertainer but with some loopholes. Shot in 35mm length (cinemascope), Gopi Krishna Movies should have screened this film on the projectors of its new outlets “Om”, “Nama” and “Shivaya” than screening it in its old theater Gopi, which seriously needs some serious renovations. Nonetheless, considering the fact that it’s only Gopi hall that can occupy maximum people while the new three halls cannot have more than 250 people, it can be understood why Poudel chose Gopi. But it’s high time for this big production house to reconstruct its infrastructures as it doesn’t feel good to fall off while watching movies, and of course, you would not want to step on a pothole inside a cinema hall. Coming back to the movie, The Flash Back: Farkera Herda is weak in its execution. Director Dahal has carelessly left many sequences incomplete, making Gopi Krishna’s hefty production costs go wasted. This is not to demoralize him but it’s high time that he understands what huge responsibilities a director has in any movie. The scriptwriter of the film also fails badly to deliver anything serious through his script. The dialogues often end incomplete. A boy is the son of a multimillionaire. A girl is from a middle class background. They both come to know each other at a wedding. The wedding is of the boy’s cousin, who is coincidentally the best friend of the girl. Boy and girl befriend each other in course of time, but their parents pull in the line of rich and poor between their relationships and put them away from each other. Predictably, the boy doesn’t give up and is willing to take up everything he hates to get his girl back to him. Actions follow one after the other. What is interesting during all this is a little bit of presentation, and most importantly, the expressions of Aryan Sigdel. Yes, it’s not a new story to look for, but it’s still entertaining in its own way. The soundtracks composed by Suresh Adhikary are the bonus in the film. For sure, one of the numbers sung by Udit Narayan Jha will remain on the music charts for sometime. Music is the best part of the film. Gopi Krishna Movies has carefully picked new kinds of compositions in this film. It’s no more ghintang-ghintang tunes in the voice of Dipak Limbu. Promising singers Manoj, Pramod Kharel and Rajesh Payal Rai have given a different feel to Nepali playback singing. Raju Thapa, despite being one of the most sought-after cinematographers of Nepali silver screen, looks like a beginner in The Flash Back: Farkera Herda. If a cinematographer cannot even capture a moving bus neatly, it’s difficult to expect much from him. So many locations of Pokhara could have looked breathtaking if only Thapa would have researched more. Action director Roshan Shrestha’s action scenes are worth appreciating as they don’t look repetitive, but the sound editing kills all the fun. The presentation of the movie would have been really appealing if the editing was taken care of well. Most of the time, one sequence of the film doesn’t go hand in hand. Because the sound editing is poor, you hardly get to hear the dialogues neatly. Director Dahal is again to be blamed for this. Kabi Raj and Gahat Raj’s choreography is better than average. Costume designer Meera Rana’s creativity needs to be questioned as she keeps on repeating the same ghangra for the actress almost throughout the movie. Aryan Sigdel is undoubtedly the show stealer. From Kismat to Mausam, Hifajat, Mero Euta Saathi Chha, and now The Flash Back: Farkera Herda, he has made sure he leaves no one disappointed. He surely is a tough competition for many in the film industry who self-proclaim that they are the number ones on the scene. He is almost perfect as an actor to play different characters. Well, I would not want to be harsh and rude, but actress Yuna Uprety needs to take up some acting classes. Though she is now a better dancer her acting is all plastic. From the time of Parkhi Basen to Pahilo Pahilo Maya and now The Flash Back, there are no improvements. What is she doing in the film?, apart from snubbing and making some weird sounds in the film, is what I kept asking myself. All in all, The Flash Back: Farkera Herda is still worth going for a film, if we sit to compare this film with other Nepali cinemas that are releasing in recent times. Yes, it’s better than Rekha Thapa’s “Hifaajat” and Dipak Shrestha’s “Pahilo Pahilo Maya.” Considering other Nepali films, this is a must-see. Go for it without keeping any Bollywood and Hollywood movies in your mind. If I have to rate, I would give this film 2.5 out of 5.

Nepali Movie Chapali Height

KATHMANDU, March 20: The film “Chapali Height” garnered much controversy prior to the release – but for all the wrong reasons! First came the accusations on the poster being copied from Basic Instinct, the 1992 Hollywood thriller; then came the press conference called out by one of the leads of the movie, Bineeta Baral, where she said she wished to clarify that the promotional pictures released were not nude photographs. There was an objection to the hoarding board of the film by the police to which the director responded with an enormous question mark. Finally, the film touted as a sexual thriller received an Adult certificate. After the film finally hit the theatres, one is left questioning: why put up so much for a film like this? The film would have been better if it was a rip-off of a Hollywood hit, like alleged. But sadly, it is not. It is something dreadful. Chapali Height, for its basic plot, had the potential to be a first of its kind cult film in Nepali cinema. It had non-mainstream content, very few characters and a few locations. However, the makers seem so overwhelmed with their own idea that they end up making a mess. The story begins with Raj (Raj Ghimire) waking up exhausted after a nightmare to receive a call from his friend who requests him to shelter him and his girlfriend in his house at Chapali Height. Bineeta Baral (Bini) is the girlfriend who indulges in chatpate and likes to sway to any music that plays. She talks a bit too much and plays weird sexual games to such an extent that she manages to miff off her boyfriend. Now, her boyfriend Amir (Amir Gautam) for most part seems fine with Bini’s ways. In fact, he actually encourages her as he dances along, intoxicating himself with alcohol and cigarettes. He likes playing tennis and carries multiple sim cards in his pockets which have nothing to do with the film, much like many other scenes. Now be warned, for the film is a compilation of such tasteless scenes. A good 20 minutes of the film are wasted on the highway while the couple, Bini and Amir, elope and drive towards Kathmandu. The highway for them, not for the audiences, is extremely adventurous for they encounter some rowdy helmetless bikers in a short spell of swearing beep words. The bikers meet with an accident, and the couple celebrates with a Lakhe who appears out of nowhere and starts dancing in the middle of the road. The film, and thank God for that, starts officially when the couple reach Chapali Height at sundown where Bini displays her extreme open mindedness, standing in front of both the guys asking if she looks sexy dressed only in a shirt. Then the eloped couple indulges in a perverted fest in presence of Raj which is awkward for him as well as the audiences in the cinema hall who laugh out loud! The chuckles don’t end for the audience mocks those scenes by which the film intends to shock, thrill or at times scare. Amazingly, however, the filmmakers manage to insert sex psychology even if only for a small part. Sadly the score in enticing the audience is a zero. As you move further you get the feel that, the script of Chapali Height might just be a rip-off of some bad erotic story that somehow stuck to into the writer’s head. The treatment is that of a short film with lethargically extended scenes. Dirgha Khadka’s editing of the film is terrible. Scenes showing time lapses using the “dissolve” feature in an editing software does not get the film moving. Nor does cutting from a wide angle to another wide angle.

How to disable a stolen mobile phone

Have your mobile stolen ? Don't worry, he who has stolen your mobile can't even sell your stolen mobile if you read this article carefully.
Simply write down on your mobile phone following code.
To check your Mobile Phone's Serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:All mobile phone users should keep a note of their handset's serial number (known as the 'IMEI'), as it's very handy if the phone is lost or stolen. The number can normally be found under the battery (looking something like 004400/01/123456/7).
You can also get this number from the phone software, by entering following usefull code

Simply write down on your mobile phone following code.

* # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen after pressing send button, or in some phones it comes automatically just by writing above given code. . This Number is unique to your Handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phone.

Speed Up Start Menu in Windows XP

How can I speed-up the very s..l..o..w Start menu in Windows XP?

The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing it's settings from the Registry:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
  2. Locate the following key in the registry:
     HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/
  1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
    "MenuShowDelay"=0
  2. Close the registry editor.
Another easy way to speed up the display of the Start Menu Items is to turn off the menu shadow:
  1. Right click on an open area of the Desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Click on the Appearance tab.
  4. Click on the Effects button.
  5. Uncheck Show shadows under menus.

Disabling User Account Control (UAC) in Windows 7

As described in previous articles, User Account Control (or UAC) is included in Windows to help prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. UAC notifies you when changes are going to be made to your computer that require administrator-level permission. These types of changes can affect the security of your computer or can affect settings for other people that use the computer.

When you are notified by UAC that there is a pending change to your computer, you should carefully read the contents of each dialog box before allowing changes to be made to your computer. It's usually safe to allow changes to be made to Windows settings without you being notified. However, certain programs that come with Windows can have commands or data passed to them, and malicious software can take advantage of this by using these programs to install files or change settings on your computer. You should always be careful about which programs you allow to run on your computer.

In Windows 7, UAC settings has a slider to change the level of the notifications and allows you to choose one between the following four options:

Always notify - With this option, you'll be notified before programs make changes to your computer or to Windows settings that require the permissions of an administrator. When you're notified, your desktop will be dimmed, and you must either approve or deny the request in the UAC dialog box before you can do anything else on your computer. The dimming of your desktop is referred to as the secure desktop because other programs can't run while it's dimmed. This is the most secure setting, and is similar to what the Windows Vista UAC looked like.
Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer - You will be notified before programs make changes to your computer that require the permissions of an administrator. You will not be notified if you try to make changes to Windows settings that require the permissions of an administrator. Also, you will be notified if a program outside of Windows tries to make changes to a Windows setting. This is the default setting.
Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop) - You will be notified before programs make changes to your computer that require the permissions of an administrator, and you will be notified if a program outside of Windows tries to make changes to a Windows setting.. However, you will not be notified if you try to make changes to Windows settings that require the permissions of an administrator. This setting is the same as "Notify only when programs try to make changes to my computer," but you are not notified on the secure desktop. Because the UAC dialog box isn't on the secure desktop with this setting, other programs might be able to interfere with the dialog's visual appearance. This is a small security risk if you already have a malicious program running on your computer.
Never notify - You will not be notified before any changes are made to your computer. If you are logged on as an administrator, programs can make changes to your computer without you knowing about it. If you are logged on as a standard user, any changes that require the permissions of an administrator will automatically be denied. This is actually somewhat similar to using Windows 7 in the permission model of Windows XP. This is the least secure setting. When you set UAC to never notify, you open up your computer to potential security risks.
Personally, and unlike my recommendations on disabling UAC for Vista, I now think it's a good idea to leave UAC on if possible. Adjusting your notification options can make that a little easier to do.
If you do disable UAC, be aware of which programs you run as they'll have the same access to the computer as you do. This includes reading and making changes to protected system areas, your personal data, saved files, and anything else stored on the computer. Programs will also be able to communicate and transfer information to and from anything your computer connects with, including the Internet.
There are many ways to disable UAC on your computer. Here are a few...

Option A - Disable UAC Through User Account Control Settings

This is the method that should be used by most users wanting to disable UAC.
Go to User Account Control Settings.
Type in UAC, or go to the System and Security applet.
Click on the "Change User Account Control Settings" link.
disable-uac-win7-1
BTW, you can also type in this command from the Run menu:
C:\Windows\System32\UserAccountControlSettings.exe
To turn off UAC, move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
disable-uac-win7-2
To turn UAC back on, move the slider to choose when you want to be notified, and then click OK.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
You will need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off.

Option B - Disable UAC Through Group Policy

This is the method that should be used by administrators wanting to disable UAC across several computers at once.
This can be done via Local Group Policy or via Active Directory-based GPO, which is much more suited for large networks where one would like to disable UAC for many computers at once.
If using Local Group Policy you'll need to open the Group Policy Editor (Start > Run > gpedit.msc).
If using in AD-based GPO, open Group Policy Management Console (Start > Run > gpmc.msc) from a Windows Vista/7/2008 computer that is a member of the domain. In the GPMC window, browse to the required GPO that is linked to the OU or domain where the computers are located, then edit it, or, if needed, create a new GPO.
disable-uac-win7-gpo-1
disable-uac-win7-gpo-2
disable-uac-win7-gpo-3
In the Group Policy Editor window, browse to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.

Make the following changes:
  • User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Set its value to Elevate without prompting.
  • User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation - Set its value to Disabled.
  • User Account Control: Only elevate UIAccess applications that are installed in secure locations - Set its value to Disabled.
  • User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Set its value to Disabled.
disable-uac-win7-gpo-4
Restart the computer when done.

Option C - Disable UAC Through the Registry

Another method to disable  UAC is through the computer's Registry.
Warning!
This document contains instructions for editing the registry. If you make any error while editing the registry, you can potentially cause Windows to fail or be unable to boot, requiring you to reinstall Windows. Edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the registry before making any changes. If you do not feel comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt these instructions. Instead, seek the help of a trained computer specialist.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click Enter.
If prompted to enter your credentials by UAC, do so and/or press Yes to continue.
Navigate to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

In the details pane, locate the EnableLUA key (REG_DWORD type).
On the Edit menu, click Modify. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
disable-uac-win7-registry-1
Exit Registry Editor, and then reboot the computer.

Creating a Partition During Windows 7 Installation

During the installation of Windows 7, you must choose a partition on which to install the operating system. Reading Microsoft's recommendations, you must make this partition at least 16GB in size. However, this is a minimal size and should not be used as the recommended size. As you know by now, the system partition (meaning the partition on which the operating system is installed on) is a place that just begs for more space as time goes by. Hotfixes, Patches, Service Packs, installed applications such as Microsoft Office and many others - all consume a lot of space on that partition. The more it is used, the more space will be consumed by these apps.

That is why it is strongly recommended to properly configure the partition's size. While it is possible to extend this partition (if un-used space is available on the hard disk - read my "Extending the System Partition in Windows 7" article), it is best to plan in advance. As a rule of thumb, I personally give that partition at least 40 GB of space, and when using more than one hard disk on the computer, I give it as much as 100 GB. Just in case.
Anyway, while it is possible to extend that partition later, even after installation of the OS, it is best to plan accordingly and create the right partition size during the installation process. Read my article on how to install Windows 7 for more information.
Starting a Windows 7 installation, after passing the first initial screens, you will get to the screen where you are asked which type of installation you want to perform.

At that point you will need to click on "Custom (advanced)", as this is a fresh installation of Windows 7.
The next screen will ask you where you want to install the system, meaning on what partition.

At that point, you need to decide on one of the two options:
  1. Install Windows on the entire available disk space
  2. Create a partition on the hard disk, and install Windows on that partition
If you pick option #1, then you simply click "Next" and get done with it. The setup program will create a partition on the entire hard disk and format it with the NTFS file system. It will then install Windows on that partition.

However, if you pick option #2 you can then create the partition exactly as you want it.
Click on "Drive options (advanced)". The screen will change and show you several new buttons:
New - to create a new partition.
Delete - to delete a specific partition - all data on that partition will be deleted!
Format - to format a specific partition - all data on that partition will be deleted!
Extend - to extend a partition beyond the barrier of the physical disk, and to span the partition on more than one physical disk. This is useful when you run out of space on that physical hard disk, and have brought in a new physical hard disk that you wish to use. However, unlike using that new disk as a totally new partition by itself, this disk (or part of it) becomes a part of a partition located on the first disk. While useful in some cases, this scenario might cause fault tolerance issues, because this extended partition is NOT fault tolerant, and if something happens to one physical disk, all the data on that extended partition becomes unavailable, and data loss can occur.

To create a new partition click "New". In the "Size" box, enter the size for the new partition. When done, click "Apply".

The setup program will let you know that it will create an additional partition on that drive. That partition will be, by default, hidden, and contain the necessary files to boot the computer. This partition will consume 100 MB of disk space.
Note: Actually, even if you do not manually create the partition by using this procedure Windows will still create this partition. However, since you did manually create the partition, Windows will tell you that another partition will also be created.

You can now see the partition you've created, and the hidden boot partition. In most cases, the partition on which Windows will be installed is partition number 2.
Press "Format" to format the new partition.

You'll be warned that all data will be deleted. That should pose no issue because the partition was just created, and it is blank.

Installation will now commence as usual.

Another way to manipulate partitions during the Windows installation
Fact is that there's another way to manipulate partitions during the Windows installation. This is done by using the DISKPART command. This command is very useful for creating, extending, expanding, shrinking and performing other tasks on partitions and disks. To get to it you need to press SHIFT + F10 while the setup program is running.

A command prompt window will open. In it, type
diskpart
An interactive command will be displayed.

You can use /? to get to the DISKPART help.

Remember that you can always resize the system partition, but there's no substitution to a proper planning in advance!

Windows has a tendency to accumulate errors and problems over time. While some of this virtual wear and tear can be delayed by rigorous system maintenance and keeping malware at the gate, the time will come when you will be forced to reinstall your system.
A Windows re-installation is a tedious process. It takes time and once the new installation is in place, you essentially start from scratch. Your user files are wiped and have to be restored, programs need to be re-installed, and personal preferences have to be set up all over again. Since the ‘perfect setup’ is a work in progress, driven by all sorts of updates and new gadgets, creating an image of your operating system is a waste of time. And as time goes by, the nightmare will start all over again. Except if there was a way to re-install your operating system and fix system-based issues without losing all your stuff….
Starting with Windows XP, Microsoft has been offering what is called a “non-destructive reinstall ability” for Windows. It is a way of re-installing the operating system without changing user data, settings, and preferences, including installed programs and drivers. After re-installing Windows with this method, you will log onto your account as if nothing had happened, except that all system files were ‘updated’, which almost equals a fresh installation.

Preface: What You Need

  • Windows 7 installation DVD.
  • original 25-character product key.
  • minimum 12,869MB free space on system drive (C:)
  • bootable Windows 7 installation.
If you don’t have an installation DVD for your edition of Windows 7, it’s OK to borrow one or create it with a torrent download. The important thing is that you currently run a genuine copy of Windows 7.

The product key can typically be found on a sticker on your computer. If you can’t find and don’t know your original product key it is not OK to use another product key! You can, however, recover all product keys of your present installation, including the operating system itself, using Bean KeyFinder.
For the non-destructive installation to work, you must be able to boot into Windows 7 full, not Safe Mode. I also highly recommend to prepare a backup of your data before you attempt to re-install.

Step 1: Uninstall Service Pack 1

Running SP1 can cause issues when performing a non-destructive re-installation with an installation DVD that does not contain SP1. It is thus recommended to uninstall SP1 before you proceed.
  • Go to > Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features or > Programs > Uninstall a Program.
  • In the left-hand side click > View installed updates
  • Select > Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932) and click > Uninstall.

Step 2: Run Setup In Compatibility Mode

This step is optional. You can skip it and return to it if needed. The pre-installation compatibility report might not let you proceed due to the following issue:
Your current version of Windows is more recent than the version you are trying to upgrade to. Windows cannot complete upgrade.
To avoid this error :
  • Go to > Computer, right-click on the installation DVD and select > Open.
  • Right-click on > setup.exe and choose > Properties.
  • Switch to the > Compatibility tab and check > Run this program in compatibility mode for: and pick > Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the list.
  • Click > OK and double-click > setup.exe to launch the installation.

Step 3: Run Setup

When you run the setup.exe from the DVD, Windows will ask whether you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer. Click > Yes to proceed.

In the next windows click > Install now to start the installation.

Windows setup will now proceed with copying temporary files and running a compatibility check. When presented with the first selection screen (see screenshot below), select the first option to > go online and get the latest updates, then > accept the license terms and press > Next to continue.

Key Step: Select Upgrade Installation Type

Select > Upgrade when asked which type of installation you want.
upgrade windows 7
You are not actually upgrading, but rather installing the same operating system over your existing installation. However, since you selected upgrade, your files, settings, and programs will be left alone. The installation takes about an hour and will re-boot your system several times during the process.

Finally, you will be asked to enter your product key and after going through a few basic settings and re-starting Windows one more time, you will finally be able to log into your refreshed old account.

When you first log into your account, you will also be asked to activate your account. Do this immediately to prevent restrictions.

Aftermath: Run Updates, Upgrade Internet Explorer & Install SP1

Several things were changed when your system was upgraded. You were reverted to the Service Pack version on your installation DVD (likely pre-SP1) and Internet Explorer was downgraded to version 8 (in case you were running IE9).
Go to > Start > Control Panel > Windows Update or > System and Security > Windows Update and click on > Install updates. You will have to reboot and go through this process several times to bring your system up to date. If you don’t see any updates, click on > Check for updates on the left-hand side.

The entire update procedure took me around 90 minutes, which was a lot faster and a lot less hassle than a complete re-installation. What are your experiences with the process?

3 Ways To Speed Up The Windows 7 Shutdown Process

Ever since I switched to Windows 7 on my laptop, which had previously shut down within seconds while running on Windows XP, the slow shutdown has been nagging me. If you also happen to be looking for ways to kick-start a Windows 7 slow shutdown, look no further! Here I will introduce you to 3 ways to optimize or speed up the logoff process, so that you can leave the office or get into bed faster.

Prologue

I tested these tips one after the other on my Windows 7 netbook (which shut down significantly faster after upgrading to 2GB RAM). I booted into Windows, started some standard programs, including Skype and Chrome with several different tabs open, waited until they had fully loaded, and then shut down the computer. In its native state, the shutdown took 32 seconds from clicking the ‘Shutdown’ button until the laptop had fully shut down.
Initial shutdown time on test machine: 32 seconds

1. Reduce Timeout To Kill Service Or App

Before Windows shuts down, it attempts to properly close all running processes. If a service doesn’t close immediately, Windows waits for a few seconds, until it prompts the user that the service is not responding to the shutdown request. The amount of this waiting time is defined by registry keys and you can reduce it.

These are two fairly harmless registry hacks. If you follow the steps outlined in this article, it should in no way harm your system. Nevertheless, I have to issue a warning:
Editing the registry can damage your operating system! I or MakeUseOf take no responsibility whatsoever!  Make a backup of your registry before continuing.
For the first hack, click the key combination > [WINDOWS] + [R], type > regedit into the text field, and click > OK to launch the registry editor.
In the registry editor, navigate to this folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Within that folder (on the right) find and double-click the string > WaitToKillServiceTimeout.
In the > Edit String window, change the > Value data from the default of 12000 (12 seconds) to 2000 (2 seconds). Click > OK to save the change.

For the second hack, navigate to the following location via the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
On the right, find and double-click the string > WaitToKillAppTimeout.

If this entry does not exist, you can create it. Right-click into the folder and click through > New > String Value, and name it > WaitToKillAppTimeout.
Set > Value data to 2000, click > OK.
In the same registry folder, if you see an entry called > AutoEndTasks, set its > Value data to 1, then close the registry editor.
Shutdown time: 27 seconds

2. Create a Fast Shutdown Shortcut

As of Windows 2000, Windows has come with a remote shutdown tool to shut down and restart Windows. You can control this tool through the command line, but a much faster alternative is to create a shortcut.
  • Right-click your Windows 7 desktop and select > New > Shortcut.
  • Enter > shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f in the location field, click > Next, give the shortcut a descriptive name, e.g. Shut Down Computer, and click Finish.

The letters (options) added above tell the tool to shut down (-s) with a timeout of zero seconds (-t 00), and to force running applications to close without forewarning the user (-f). Basically, it unites the registry hacks from the first tip in the shutdown process. You can see a full list of options when typing > shutdown.exe into the command prompt, which you can open via > [WINDOWS] + [R] then type > cmd into the text field and click > OK.
You can move this shortcut from the desktop to your quick launch bar or pin it to the taskbar. Double-click the shortcut to instantly shut down the system.

3. Brute-Force Method

This method is also known as hard boot, as it is typically used to shut down and immediately reboot the computer. It should be used with extreme caution!
If you’re in a hurry and cannot wait for 20 seconds or if your computer responds slowly or even froze, simply hold the power button for several seconds and Windows will shut down immediately. Since this method literally kills not only the operating system, but also the hardware, it should not be used as a routine way of shutting down your computer. In a worst case scenario, it could cause your hard drive to crash.
Shutdown time: 5 seconds

15 Best Windows 7 Tips and Hacks

1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Using the mouse, you can drag-”˜n-dock windows to either side of the screen, or drag it to the top to maximize it. These keyboard shortcuts are even faster:
  • Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock the window to the left and right side of the screen
  • Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximize and restore/minimize
  • Win+M minimizes everything
  • Alt+Up, Alt+Left Arrow, Alt+Right Arrow navigate to parent folder, or browse Back and Forward through folders in Explorer
  • Win+Home minimizes/restores all open windows except the active window
  • Alt+Win+# accesses the Jump List of program number ‘#’ on the taskbar

2.Rearrange System Tray Icons

You can rearrange icons on the taskbar as you wish and start new (or switch to running) instances of the first ten taskbar programs using Win+1, Win+2, and so on. The cool thing is you can also rearrange system tray icons. Reorder them on the tray or move them outside or back in the tray. Take control of what you want to always keep an eye on, and from which apps you’ll require notifications.

3. Access Jump Lists with the Left Mouse Button

Jump Lists usually show up when you right-click on a taskbar icon. However, they can also be accessed by holding the left mouse button and dragging upwards. If you’re using a laptop touchpad or a touch screen, this is convenient because you do not have to click any button to access a context menu.

4. Add Any Folder to Favorites

You can add any library or folder to the Favorites section in Windows Explorer. To add a folder, navigate to it in Explorer, right-click Favorites in the left navigation pane, and select Add current location to Favorites. Now you get quick access to your favorite folders in all File->Save As dialogs!

5. Pin Frequently Used Folders to the Taskbar

Right-click, drag, and pin your favorite folders to Windows Explorer on the taskbar. They will now show up in the Jump List when you right click on Explorer giving you quick access to your favorite folders.

6. Pin Control Panel to the Taskbar

PinControlPanel
You cannot pin the Control Panel to the taskbar via the Start Menu or by drag and drop. Open the Control Panel and right-click its taskbar icon to pin it to the taskbar. An advantage of this is that Control Panel’s Jump List allows quick access to recently used functions.

7. Create Keyboard Shortcuts for Programs

You can create keyboard shortcuts for any program in Windows 7. Right-click the program icon and select Properties. Select the Shortcut tab, click in Shortcut key, to set the keyboard shortcut for that program.

8. Open Command Prompt in Any Folder

Like the command prompt? Miss the “˜Open Command Window Here’ Windows XP power toy? Press “˜Shift’ when right-clicking on a folder to get that option in the context menu. This also works on the desktop. No power toy required!

9. View Expanded ‘Send To’ Menu

Press Shift when right-clicking on a folder to get an expanded Send To menu.

10. Adjust Screen Text with Clear Type

Use Clear Type Tuner for the best look on your LCD monitor or laptop screen. Run “˜cttune.exe‘ from the Start Menu search box, or go to the Control Panel Display applet, and select Adjust ClearType Text from the left.

11. Get Exact Colors On Your Screen

If you are an artist or you work with colors, use the Calibrate Color option in the Control Panel Display applet or run dccw.exe from the Start Menu search box. You can adjust gamma, brightness, contrast, and color balance, ensuring that colors are displayed correctly on your screen.

12. Customize the Power Button

If you restart your computer more often than you shut it down, change the default Shutdown power button to Restart. Right-click on Start, select Properties, and choose the Power button action that you use the most.

13. Customize Number of Items in Jump Lists & Start Menu

Right-click Start, select Properties, click Customize and choose the number of recent programs to be shown in the Start Menu and the number of items displayed in Jump Lists from the Start Menu Size section below.

14. Search Internet from the Start Menu

SearchInternetStartMenu
Enable Internet search from the Start Menu using your default browser. Run GPEDIT.MSC from the Start Menu search box to start the Group Policy Editor. In the left pane, go to User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar. In the right pane, right-click to Edit and Enable Add Search Internet link to Start Menu.

15. Add Videos to Start Menu

Windows 7 does not place a link to your videos on the Start Menu by default. To add a link to your videos on the Start Menu, right-click Start, select Properties, click on Customize. In the Videos section at the bottom, choose Display as a link.
